Unit 3: Investigating Sydney’s Q Station as an important place

Content focus:

In this unit students identify and represent the location of the Q-Station using maps, spatial technologies and visual representations. Students use a range of geographical tools to explore the features of and activities occurring at the Q Station. In so doing, they develop an understanding about what makes the Q Station important as a place for different groups of people. Students learn about the importance of looking after the Q Station. Throughout the unit students are encouraged to design and develop their own representation of their learning to communicate their understanding about the Q Station.

Content:

Locating places

Students investigate how the location of places can be represented.

Important places

Students investigate the importance of places they live in and belong to.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander places

Students investigate the Countries/Places important to Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander Peoples.

Key inquiry questions:

  • identifies the location of the Q Station
  • describes the features of the Q Station to demonstrate an understanding about the importance of this place to people
  • identifies the ways in which the Q Station can be cared for
  • communicates geographical information and uses geographical tools.

Geographical concepts:

  • Place: the significance of places and what they are like. For example:places students live in and belong to and why they are important.
  • Space: the significance of location and spatial distribution, and ways people organise and manage the spaces that we live in. For example: location of a place in relation to other familiar places.
  • Environment: the significance of the environment in human life, and the important interrelationships between humans and the environment. For example, how and why places should be looked after.

Please note: The former North Head Quarantine Station is located in Sydney Harbour National Park, Manly, and is now known as the Q Station.

Outcomes:
A student:

  • identifies the location of the Q Station
  • describes the features of the Q Station to demonstrate an understanding about the importance of this place to people
  • identifies the ways in which the Q Station can be cared for
  • communicates geographical information and uses geographical tools.
